Eradicating Flamer Malware
06/11/2012 - Virus writers are evolving the use of encryption and other
techniques to hide malicious code from detection software. They have direct access to the operating system documentation
(for Windows, Mac, etc.); the same documentation used by developers. They have traditionally made sure they're malicious
code evades detection by signature based antivirus detection. This fact and economics means the number of crackers and
malicious attacks will continue to increase.
In
spite of this, researchers have been baffled as to how the Flame Malware has been devised to avoid detection for two
years (not matching the available antivirus signatures) with the ability to infect fully patched Windows 7 machines...
Security Researchers have identified ‘Windows Update' as the mechanism Flame uses to infiltrate and compromise
networks.
Network Infection
Crackers exploited a flaw in the Microsoft Terminal Services licensing certificate authority, which allowed them
to generate a new certificate that was "signed" by Microsoft. This particular kind of certificate (valid from
February 2010 and February 2012) gave crackers a clear avenue into most computers running Windows.
This sophistication in malware creation has never been seen before. Many security experts are just amazed, calling
it "the Holy Grail of malware writers" and "the nightmare scenario". Antivirus Researchers (such
as) Symantec and Kaspersky said that Flame didn't actually compromise anything in ‘Windows Update' and it did not
compromise the service or servers.
Computer to Computer Infection
Flame conducted an imitative deception operation of Windows Update (a military grade attack). Using this process
it was able to make all other computers on the network believe, that it's the Windows Update server. It Then collected
the NetBIOS information (which identifies each computer) and used that info to send Windows Update requests through Internet
Explorer. Flame makes itself a Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Protocol (WPAD), and sends configuration files to all of
the requesting PC's.
Configuration files sent from computer to computer through the WPAD directs the compromised machine to redirect
all traffic through the infected machine. When Flame detects a URL request matching the Windows Update URL, it transmits
a new downloader (disguised as an update from Microsoft) to infiltrate the machine disguised as a ‘.cab' file.
Once the update is executed, it downloads a copy of Flame from the infected machine to the clean machine.
Microsoft (upon detection) has blocked three certificates that were used by attackers, preventing additional spoofing
of Windows Update (as long as there are no more rogue certificates in the wild). They have also implemented prevention
procedures to stop others from creating new code signing certificates.
Attack Vectors and Instructions
Flamer spreads from computer to computer, however; It doesn't do that automatically, instead it waits for
the attacker to send instructions. Here are the additional methods that Flamer uses to spread:
- It uses captured credentials from administrators – spreads through network shares. - It uses (CVE-2010-2729), spreading through a Microsoft Windows
Print Spooler Service Remote Code Execution Vulnerability, which was previously used by Stuxnet. - It uses removable media – spreading through a specially
crafted autorun file. - It uses removable
drives – spreading through a special directory that hides the files. It can execute automatically
while viewing the USB drive, if combined with the (CVE-2010-2568), the Microsoft Windows Shortcut
‘LNK/PIF' Files Automatic File Execution Vulnerability
The Last vector has not been seen before (using junction points exclusively). A junction point is actually an alias
to a directory, which has some special attributes. The interesting thing is that Flamer uses junction points, and makes
them hide its files and enable auto-execution.
Flamer
creates a directory and places three files there –‘ mssecmgr.ocx', ‘desktop.ini' and ‘target.lnk'
the configuration file in the ‘desktop.ini' file causing this directory to work as a junction point. However,
Flamer uses a special trick, to make the junction point lead to a file instead of a directory. So this directory leads
to a file named ‘target.lnk'. That means that this folder won't be accessible by the user, and the files inside
will be hidden.
Flamer uses (CVE-2010-2568) Microsoft Windows Shortcut ‘LNK/PIF' Files Automatic File Execution Vulnerability
to be executed. Then the ‘target.lnk' file will be used and automatically parsed, and by using the "shortcut"
vulnerability, it will execute the Flamer (mssecmgr.ocx). Additionally, Flamer might change it's names to LSS.OCX, SYSTEM32.DAT,
NTVOLUME.DAT, or probably any other name.
In Conclusion
Flamer uses new techniques to get executed and hide itself. Moreover, it exploits the old techniques too. It
is incredibly large, and it will probably show us some more techniques as new versions continue to morph. BitDefender,
Kaspersky, Norton and some of the other antivirus companies have released a free tool which removes the scariest cyber
espionage tool ever. Please use one of the automatic removal tools listed below to eradicate this weapon.

Change Your Password on LinkedIn
06/10/2012 - Over six million passwords have been stolen from one of the largest (professional) social networks.
LinkedIn connects millions of job seekers and employers from all over the world. It currently has more than
160 million users (making it an attractive for computer crackers).
No cybercrime group has claimed responsibility for the breach. However, over
6 million passwords have been posted online (making it imperitive that LinkedIn users change their passwords immediately).
So far LinkedIn has only advised its users to change their passwords. Basically those users, who have been attacked,
received a message with the instructions informing them of how to reset their passwords.
For those people who use the same password for many social
networks or other accounts, this should cause some extra concern due to the fact that crackers will use these passwords
to implement additional attacks on victims digital identities. This is the reason, security experts strongly
advise users to avoid using the same passwords for different websites and changing passwords periodically (at least every
90 days).
Computer crackers will probably use this incident
to implement new attacks, so users should be vigilant when they encounter incoming emails and messages. It is most
likely that the number of scams and attacks will increase now, as more crackers will take advantage of this data. Users need to be concious of this incident as crackers try infiltrate victims digital lives. If you have
a LinkedIn account, it is strongly advised that you change your password even if you didn’t receive any notification
directing you to do so. Make sure you create a strong password and don’t repeat it on any of your other accounts.

Removing The "Fatal Error!" pop up 06/07/2012 - "Fatal Error!" pop up is an illicit alert notice from rogue anti-spyware WinCoDecPRO. It claims that a computers media system is corrupted and has to be updated immediately to
resolve the issue. The alert message reads:
"ERROR. Fatal Error! The media system on your computer is corrupt.
Update your video codec immediately to resolve the issue."
Simply closing the "Fatal Error!"
pop up window will not help you eradicate this persistant alert message. It will continue to pop-up again, disrupting
a user's work flow. We strongly recommend you to remove this infection immediately after detection. Pleaase use one of

they will never ask you to pay a fine by entering your credit card number. If you have given your information to
scammers regarding this parasite, contact your credit card company and dispute the charges. Once they compromise your

Completely Protect Your Digital Identity
06/06/2012 - Cybercriminals purchase used digital devices’ on Ebay, at yard sales and thrift stores. It can be an easy
task for identity thieves to get private information from your PC and other devices if you don't properly delete those
files. You may have already formatted your computer. Perhaps you went the extra mile and verified that certain files
were deleted. These files, however, leave physical imprints or shadows on your hard disk, and skilled crackers can access your confidential information—even after it has been “deleted”. As General Patton
said of Rommel in WWII, ‘I read your book’, these guys will read your book. Users
believe they have erased their data but, if you have not used military grade removal, data is still retrievable. Deleting
data only erases the pointers, not the data. Simply emptying your desktop trash folder definitely does not do it.
Your hard drive can store volumes of potentially dangerous information, including business files and forms, bank
information, credit card numbers, and personal login summaries and even viruses … It is a digital book. It has
a title and a table of contents and the information that makes up your digital life. It is filled with personal data
you wouldn't want the rest of the world to see. While deleting the files simply erases the entry pointer (on a PC) in
the table of contents, the information is still there. The only thing removed is the reference information

the hard drive many times are very effective; those that overwrite or wipe the drive only once may not prevent information
being wiped from being recovered later.
If your old computer contains sensitive information that would be valuable to an identity thief, consider
using a program that overwrites or wipes the hard drive many times.
You can also remove the hard drive, and physically destroy it. Also keep in mind: If you use your home or personal
computer for business purposes, check with your employer about how to manage information on your computer that’s
business-related. The law requires businesses to follow data security and disposal requirements for certain information
that’s related to customers.
No External Programs Needed for Android Devices
Procedures are in place for the user to implement ‘Remote Wipe’ operations for lost devices. To initiate
a manual Android device wipe process, the user must first tap their ‘Android Menu’ key to bring up a number
of on-screen options.
Next, the user must choose the ‘Settings’ option within the ‘On-Screen’ menu, and on the following screen scroll down to and tap ‘Privacy’.
Within the ‘Privacy Settings’ menu, tap the ‘Factory Data Reset’ option, and on the following screen choose whether you want to wipe all data on your device, all data on your external micro SD memory card or both,
by filling in the appropriate check boxes. Then confirm the action by tapping ‘Reset Phone’.

Apple Devices and MACS (zeroing data)
Apple has done an excellent job in providing
procedures and documentation for their users. They have prepared procedures for iPhones, iPads, iPods and the Macs. But
just like the Windows OS, the zeros and ones (known as binary) erased with a quick initialization only empties the disk’s directory . Since the system can no longer identify the files in the absence of this table of contents,
it ignores them, overwriting them on an ongoing basis as if they were not there. This means that any file on that disk
remains in a potentially recoverable state until you fill the disk with new data. You may notice that the Finder references
"available" space, not "empty" space. This can help to remind you that a disk is only truly empty
when you deliberately make it that way.
The "Zero all data" option is one way to do that. Zeroing data takes the erasure process to the next
level by converting all binary in the empty portion of the disk to zeros, a state that might be described as digitally
blank. This significantly decreases the chance that anyone who obtains your hard drive after it has been initialized
will be able to recover your files. It is good to do this at least once before selling or disposing of a computer or
hard drive. For greater security, zero all data two or more times. For high security applications, consider having the
hard drive destroyed by a professional hard drive disposal service.
If you need a higher level of security for these erased files, look for third-party disk management software that
overwrites or randomizes the "available" portion of your disk on an ongoing basis.

Mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablet computers, are important tools for the
organization and their use
is supported to achieve business goals.
However, mobile devices
also represent a significant risk to information security and
data security as, if the
appropriate security applications and procedures are not applied,
they can be a conduit for
unauthorized access to the organization’s data and IT
infrastructure.
This can subsequently lead to data leakage and system infection.
EZMoblePC has a requirement to protect its information assets in order to safeguard
its customers, intellectual property and reputation. This document outlines a set of
practices and requirements for the safe use of mobile devices.
2.
Scope
1. All mobile devices, whether owned by EZMoblePC or owned by employees, that have
access to corporate networks, data and systems, not including corporate IT-managed
laptops. This includes smartphones and
tablet computers.
2. Exemptions: Where there is a business need to be exempted from this
policy
(too costly, too complex, adversely impacting other business requirements) a risk
assessment
must be conducted being authorized by security management.
3. Policy - Technical Requirements
1.
Devices must use the following Operating Systems: Android 2.2 or later,
iOS 4.x or later.
2. Devices must store all user-saved passwords in an encrypted password store.
3. Devices must be configured with a secure password that complies with EZMoblePC's
password policy. This password must not be the same as any other credentials used
within the organization.
4.
With the exception of those devices managed by IT, devices are not allowed to be
connected directly to the internal corporate network.
3.1 User Requirements
1.
Users must only load data essential to their role onto
their mobile device(s).
2.
Users must report all lost or stolen devices to EZMoblePC
IT immediately.

If a user suspects that unauthorized access to company
data has taken place
via a mobile device, they must report the incident in alignment

Users must not load pirated software or illegal content
onto their devices.

*To jailbreak a mobile device is to remove the limitations imposed by the manufacturer.
This gives access to the operating system, thereby unlocking all its features and enabling
the installation of unauthorized software.

A. Back up important files
If you follow these tips, you're more likely to be free of interference from
hackers,
viruses,
and spammers. But no system is completely secure. If you have important
files stored on your computer, copy them onto a removable disc or

In Wi-Fi networking, the access point or router typically broadcasts
the network name
(SSID) over the air at
regular intervals. This feature was designed for businesses and
mobile hotspots where Wi-Fi clients may come and go. In the home, this feature is
unnecessary, and
it increases the likelihood an unwelcome neighbor or hacker will try
to
log in to your home network.
5) Assign Static IP Addresses to Devices
Most home networkers gravitate toward using dynamic IP addresses.
This means that
the IP Address, (the IP
Address is needed to participate on a network.) is typically
assigned automatically. A dynamic IP address on an unsecure system can also supply
a hacker with a IP Address.
6) Enable MAC Address Filtering
Each piece of Wi-Fi gear possesses a unique identifier called the "physical address"
or "MAC address." Access points and routers keep
track of the MAC addresses of all
devices that connect to them. Many such products offer the owner an option to key in the
MAC addresses of
their home equipment that restricts the network to only allow
connections from those devices. Do this, but also know that the feature is not so powerful
as it may seem. Hacker software programs
can fake MAC addresses easily.
7) Turn Off the Network During Extended Periods of Non-Use
The ultimate in security measures for any wireless network
is to shut down, or turn office
your wireless access point
when you are not using. You are the most vulnerable at work
or asleep, and mischief minded people know it.
8) Position the Router or Access Point Safely
Wi-Fi signals normally reach to the exterior of a home. A small amount
of "leakage"
outdoors is not a problem,
but the further this signal reaches, the easier it is for others
to detect and exploit. Wi-Fi signals often reach across streets and through neighboring

Remind your kids that once they post information online, they can't

stories to lure you to links that will

"Nigerian" Foreign Money Offers
The "Nigerian" scam got its name from emails that supposedly came
from Nigerian "officials" who needed your help getting at their money — which was tied up due to strife in
their country. Today, people claiming to be officials, businesspeople, or the surviving relatives of former government honchos
in countries around the world send countless offers via email to transfer thousands of dollars into your bank account if you
will just pay a fee or "taxes" to help them access their money. If you respond to the initial offer, you may receive
documents that look "official." But then, you will get more email asking you to send more money to cover transaction
and transfer costs, attorney's fees, blank letterhead, and your bank account numbers, among other information. Subsequent
emails will encourage you to travel to another country to complete the transaction. Some fraudsters have even produced trunks
of dyed or stamped money to verify their claims.The emails are from crooks trying to steal your money or commit identity
theft. Victims of this scam report that emergencies arise that require more money and delay the "transfer" of funds;
in the end, you lose your money, and the scam artist vanishes. According to the U.S. State Department, people who have responded
to these solicitations have been beaten, subjected to threats and extortion, and in some cases, murdered.If you receive an
email from someone claiming to need your help getting money out of another country, don't respond. After all, why would a stranger from another country pick you out at random to share thousands of
dollars? Report the solicitation to the appropriate government officials, and then hit delete.View a sample fraudulent foreign money offer.
Check Overpayment Schemes
Say
no to a check for more than your selling price, no matter how tempting the plea or convincing the story. Check overpayment
schemes generally target people who have posted an item for sale online. The con artist, posing as a potential buyer from
a foreign country (or a distant part of the U.S.), emails the seller and offers to buy the item with a cashier's check, money
order, personal check, or corporate check. Or the scammer may pretend to be a business owner from a foreign country, needing
"financial agents" to process payments for their U.S. orders; in exchange, they promise a commission.Regardless of the cover, here's what happens:
The scammer sends you a check that looks authentic — complete with watermarks — made payable for more money than
you expected. They ask you to deposit it in your bank account, and then wire-transfer some portion of the funds to a foreign
account. They provide convincing reasons why the check is for more than the necessary amount, and why the funds must be transferred
quickly. Sometimes, the counterfeit checks fool a bank teller, but be aware that the check still can bounce. The scammer vanishes
with the money you wired from your own account and you are on the hook for the entire amount of the worthless check. In addition,
a scammer who has your bank account number is likely to use it to withdraw more money from your account.
Reporting a Cross-Border Scam
If you think you may have responded to a cross-border scam, file a complaint at www.econsumer.gov, a project of 20 countries of the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement
Network. Then visit the FTC's identity theft website at www.ftc.gov/idtheft. While you can't completely control whether you will become a victim
